I have been to the Beach Shack countless times. It is probably my favourite "every-day" restaurant. Before I was diagnosed with coeliac disease my favourite dish from the Beach Shack was creamy chicken pesto carbonara with snow peas. Thankfully I was able to replicate this with gluten-free pasta because I don't know how I could live without having it in my life! Now that I can't eat gluten, my favourite dish on the menu is the sirloin steak with a creamy garlic sauce, chips and a garden salad. The creamy garlic sauce is probably one of the best I have tasted, and that is saying something considering I always order that sauce (or equivalent) whenever I get the option at restaurants. They also always cook the steak exactly how I like it. When I say "medium, well-done" I want a little bit of pink but not having blood pouring out everywhere, some restaurant fail to realise this distinction. The chips are fairly standard, but still enjoyable and even though I am not a big fan of salad, I quite enjoy this one.
The ambiance of the Beach Shack is always friendly and calm, which is one of the reasons I enjoy going there so much.
Then on Sunday afternoon Chris and I were a bit peckish and wanted something small to eat that wouldn't ruin our dinner and that was close by. We decided to share some nachos from "Mad Mex" at Hillarys. Again, I am not a big salad eater so I omitted a lot of that from the nachos (yes Chris let me take reign and order what I wanted!). Basically I had the corn chips topped with: marinated chicken, nachos cheese sauce, sour cream and cheddar cheese. It was surprisingly quite nice! Mad Mex will be on my list of places to go that are cheap and easily accessible.
After we had recovered from the nachos and started to get hungry again, we went to Pearl River Chinese Restaurant which is at the City Beach IGA complex. I used to go to this restaurant all the time when I was younger as my grandparents lived down the road, so it has always been a sentimental favourite. However now they actually do gluten-free chinese food, which is quite un-common for just an everyday Chinese Restaurant. Last night, the place was absolutely packed, we hadn't booked a table so had to wait about an hour, but that didn't phase us. I ordered my usual- Braised Chicken with Almonds and a small side of rice. Chris ordered the Cantonese noodles. The braised-chicken with almonds is always nice as I love the sauce and the water chestnuts that are in this dish. It probably isn't anything too special compared to other Chinese restaurants but it is one of the only places that does gluten-free, so I am happy. The service is always fast and friendly.
