Prego's

Prego's is a hidden, unknown treat in Floreat. It's my Dad's favourite place and I was so impressed when we visited I decided to show Rebecca! Bear in mind that Prego's does two sittings per night and there is pressure to move quickly if you are in the early sitting. Rebecca booked the later sitting (8) and found it very relaxed and well paced. Also bear in mind you are required to order two courses per person, which will definitely feel offputting to many. I was a little worried Rebecca wouldn't have much available in Gluten Free but I had no reason to worry. One thing that stands out about Prego's is how courteous the staff are. Rebecca was very pleased on the phone when booking and how accomodating the operator was to her needs.

We were served complimentary falafel shortly after being seated. I'm very proud of Rebecca for trying it, and even more so that she liked it! The falafel was served very much like an arancini ball, with a crisp exterior and soft, grainy interior. This falafel was decked with salsa which added an interesting element to what could have been quite simple.

My entree was the calamari, and the best calamari I had ever had. This squid was so fresh, there was almost no fishy taste and delicately soft. A light crumbing on the outside on a light, tangy salad which balanced perfectly.

My main was the crispy skin duck, I was tempted by it last visit and decided to have 'two bites at the cherry'. The duck was quite rich but the skin was chewy in a few places, nothing major to complain about. It was a rather large cut for duck, with a lot of tender meat. As always with duck, pulling it off the bone was a bit tiring and I doubt I managed to get everything I could off it.

I was still hungry, so I decided to have a look at the desserts. Only a few seconds through the waitress' descriptions, I had made my decision. The chocolate fondant. What a good decision it was! It was a beautiful rich, dark, saucy and slightly bitter fondant with a flowing centre, everything a fondant should be. A light dusting of icing sugar on the top, with a paintbrush-like stroke of berry jam for colour (amazing presentation, and delicious). I was thankfully given two scoops of ice cream (perhaps they assumed Rebecca and I would be sharing?) which was just right.

My night at Pregos saw the best entree and calamari I ever had, and best dessert as well. Even better was that it wasn't overpriced, you can get much worse food for the price ($40 a main is brilliant value for this quality of food). Thankyou to Rebecca as well for the best birthday I have had too. I will love you forever.
